1. What attractions would my family enjoy visiting while we are in Aberdeen?

Aberdeen might be best known for Wylie Park. This nationally ranked park is accentuated by two free theme parks, Storybook Land and the Land of Oz. These parks are a one stop shop for fun, including everything from fairytales and Wizard of OZ inspired interactive displays, to go-carts.

If you are looking to cool off, the Aberdeen Aquatic Center is the perfect stop. The entire family will enjoy the leisure pool with zero depth entry, multi level play structures, and exhilarating water slides.

Aberdeen is also home to the Dacotah Prairie Museum. This museum is dedicated to telling the story of this land and of the people who have lived on it, including historical Native American artifacts. Best of all, entrance is free!

2. What fun and unique “family events” are held in Aberdeen annually?

Each year Aberdeen plays backdrop to many fantastic events. Whether you come to Aberdeen in June for Family Fun Weekend at Wylie Park or Arts in the Park at Melgaard Park, you and your family will have a great time.

Wylie Park hosts a spectacular 4th of July Celebration that Aberdeen residents are willing to share. And Storybook Land Festival is a top notch family event that promotes fun and children’s literature in one fabulous weekend.

August is home to the one and only Brown County Fair.

If a cultural experience is what you are looking for, September is the month to visit. SD Film Festival and the N.E.S.D. Celtic Faire and Games happen here in Aberdeen. Come check what the buzz is all about!

1. I hear there is good hunting and fishing in Aberdeen, tell me more.

Whether it is waterfowl, upland game, big game or predators, the Aberdeen area has something for every hunter. Famous for the Chinese Ringneck Pheasant – Brown County has led the state for 8 years in the number of pheasants harvested! Nothing can match the heart pounding excitement you’ll feel as brilliantly colored roosters burst from cover with their unmistakable cackle. With more than 209,930 acres of public land and more than 114,000 acres of private hunting land in this region, there is plenty of room for all hunters to bag their limit.

Fishermen welcome! Aberdeen is in the Glacial Lakes Region and provides an exciting variety of sport fishing opportunities. Anglers can go after walleye, northern pike, crappie, largemouth bass, perch, bluegills, channel catfish and bullheads!

Storybook Land

1. What is Storybook Land?

Just over the rainbow in Wylie Park is where you’ll find Aberdeen’s magical theme park, Storybook Land. Follow the Yellow Brick Road to a land of enchantment that includes more than 65 larger than life nursery rhyme themed exhibits. Visit the medieval castle, complete with a moat guarded by knights in armor. All of your childhood stories come to life for you to share with your children.

You can also ride the Storybook Land Express or the antique carousel that features hand carved wooden animals and is a fun ride for the young and old. And, be sure to see the park from above in the Wizard’s Balloon Ride. There is no fee to visit Storybook Land and it is open from April to October.

2. Is there a fee to get into the park?

Entrance to the park is free!

3. How much time should I allow to take my family through the park?

Allow at least 2 hours. Many families spend the whole afternoon!
