Whether it's waterfowl, upland game, big game or predators, Aberdeen and northeastern South Dakota has something for every hunter!
Every October, the skies above the Aberdeen area fill with a spectacular assortment of waterfowl. Sand Lake National Wildlife Refuge, located just 30 miles northeast of Aberdeen, is a major stopping point for thousands of snow, blue and Canadian geese in their annual southern migration. Every pond, slough and lake becomes a resting spot for ducks of almost every variety - mallards, teal, redheads - they're all here!
South Dakota is famous for the most exciting, sought-after upland game bird in existence - the Chinese Ring neck Pheasant! Dense pheasant populations can be found throughout northeastern South Dakota. Nothing can match the heart-pounding excitement you'll feel when a brightly colored rooster bursts from the cover, heading skyward with its unmistakable cackle. Ample public hunting areas provide excellent hunting. A listing of private landowners who allow hunting on their property is available upon request.
Located in the Glacial Lakes Region of South Dakota, Aberdeen provides exciting sport fishing opportunities. Mina and Richmond Lakes are both within 15 minutes of Aberdeen. Anglers go after walleye, northern pike, crappie, largemouth bass, perch, bluegills, channel catfish and bullheads. Lake recreational areas feature camping, picnicking, swimming, boating, water-skiing and hiking. Aberdeen is centrally located between the Missouri River and Big Stone Lake.
